Hungary’s happenings and Romania’s beginnings….

Hello everyone, sadly it’s Charlie again, so once more I apologise for the poor use of the English language. The last you heard from us we were in Budapest. However now I am writing this from my fathers very small vineyard about 100km from Bucharest…

We now have realised the task which we have embarked on. The jump in standards of roads alone is insane since leaving Hungary. Language barriers are also coming into play a lot more, which is concerning, but we knew that problems like these were going to happen at this stage of the trip. We also know that it’s going to become harder…

We woke up on the 29th at about 9.30, and all had showers and ate porridge that we make off our trangia, which has proved a very handy acquisition. We then walked into Budapest’s town centre, hiding in the shadows of the tall, beautiful buildings. We walked along the river that goes through the town, and from there we crossed one of the many bridges and started to climb up a hill which overlooked the city. On arrival at the top we breathless, mainly from James deciding to sprint up the hill but also from the breathtaking views. Jonty was sitting gasping for air, not being at the peak fitness he normally is…. The views stretched for miles around and we were all amazed at the city. Unfortunately bad luck was still with us as on arrival on the bottom of the hill, James realized he had misplaced his phone at the top, and we couldn’t find it. James spent 10 minutes on the phone to o2 checking that his phone was blocked so, I quote “some hungarian man couldn’t rinse his phone bill calling his great aunt Sheila in Australia!” after being reassured by the o2 operator, we headed back to the car.

From Budapest we were driving through to Sibiu, a Romanian city in which we were staying at a hostel called ‘flying time’. The drive was relentless, leaving Budapest at 3.30p.m and not arriving into Sibiu until 1.30a.m romanian time… We were taken aback by the hostel, walking through bolted double doors with one painted lady stretching over both. We knocked on the door, and waited to be greeted, the door opened and we were briskly shown around the hostel and to our room, and we were all happy when we were told we got free wifi. We couldn’t get Into bed fast enough, we all jumped on our iPhones, and were immediately on Facebook. Nothing better than home comforts…

The day after we were set to meet up with my father, who would then drive us on to the vineyard. To get to tragoviste, the small city where we met my dad, we had to drive along quite a famous road, well didn’t have to, but it would have been a massive mistake if we hadn’t chosen that route. The road is called DN 7C, some have you may have seen it on top gear, it was said to be the best road in Europe according to a Mr Clarkson. It goes on for miles and miles, and on one side you are climbing a mounting then you drive through the mountain and are met by the most amazing road in the world. Accompanied by the most beautiful sights in the world the road is a perfectly balanced with bends and straights. Taken on with ferrari’s and porsches, cars with perfect downforce and brakes, we flew down the road in true chough style…. At 30mph! Every corner we thought could have been our last, with no barriers stopping us from falling to our deaths. A quote that will stick with me came from Mr Parker, “if I was ever to commit suicide, I’d come here, to the top, and drive straight off”. “why” I replied, and in true James style he giggled, and said… “would be fun, wouldn’t it…( James wanted me to say he isn’t thinking of suicide and is fully committed to coming home!)

We arrived at the vineyard late last night, and are having to use an outdoor toilet, can you hear the violin playing in the back ground, it’s a hard life isn’t it. We are all enjoying ourselves soo much, and soo far arnt missing home too much, sorry mums’…

Next stop is Turkey, and all we need to do is drive through Bulgaria, and from there the adventure really begins. We have repacked our cars much more efficiently, and now are definitely ready and prepared to take on ‘the world’.

Speak soon, but the next one should deffinately come from one of the others, so don’t fret, the blogs will improve.
